The Further Adventures Of An Idiot Abroad (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
Loved every minute! Unlike the first book, Karl wrote this one once he'd arrived back home. So instead of being a word for word written version of the TV series, there were other bits and pieces thrown in. In my opinion this made the book, as his take of things is often so crazy that you can't help rolling about laughing.I'm also very eager to ask a family member who works at Subway if his job title is also 'Sandwich Artist'. Thanks Karl! ;) When I came across this book at the airport, I was almost laughing my heart out. In the two pages that I was able to read then, it seemed like a really interesting concept and frankly, I thought the writing was witty. So I downloaded the Kindle edition as soon as I got back to India. At first, Karl's non-insights about the places he visits were humorous. But somewhere along the way, he lost the plot. It started getting to me that a person being paid to see places that are a dream for many people is unable to stop whining about toilets and food. His remarks about places (developing countries mostly) left me feeling a little bit mad at him for being so closed to the experience of travel and refusing to take things in his stride. To be fair, I know this is the concept of the book- the reluctant traveler and his mad rambling. But it just stopped being funny after a while. He got too repetitive and whiny for me to continue enjoying the book.On the plus side, though, he gets to do a lot of really amazing stuff just reading about which I felt even more determined to prioritise traveling in my life.
