Rob Delaney: Mother. Wife. Sister. Human. Warrior. Falcon. Yardstick. Turban. Cabbage. (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

To me, Rob Delaney is not funny. Whoever told Rob to write a book made a mistake. This book is a colossal failure. Rob seems like a very nice guy who struggles with the very difficult issues of alcoholism and depression (and emerges as some sort of happy father/husband comedian), but his life story could not be any more boring. What a snooze, what a disappointment. However, I should have known since he received accolades from Judd Apatow and Teju Cole. When was the last time Judd knew what was funny? As for Teju, his Open City was also a sore, pointless disappointment. The only positive thing about this book reading experience was that I endured it while watching a nice sunset on the East River. Otherwise, what a literary and comedic failure. I had a hard time really determining the rating for this. I'd give it 2.5 star if I could.About 1/4 of this book I really liked and the rest I pretty much hated. There is absolutely no doubt there are some great one-liners. Some of his Twitter posts are hilarious and he has some in the other part of the book too.But the rest of it I petty much hated. He spends most of it telling you about all the horrendously stupid things he did when he was under the influence of whatever during any particular episode. He tries to do it in a self-deprecating way, but it mostly just wants to make you stay away from him. There are plenty of serious books about addiction and what the downside of it are if you want to read them. And the bathroom humor here reaches new heights. If that's your thing, you are absolutely going to LOVE this, because there is ALOT of it. What can I say? it's not my thing.

What do You think about Rob Delaney: Mother. Wife. Sister. Human. Warrior. Falcon. Yardstick. Turban. Cabbage. (2013)?

Reading Delaney's Twitter feed has long since become something no-one needs to do, as much like George Takei on Facebook, everyone's sharing the posts anyway. Whilst still funny, I went into reading this with some wariness assuming it'd be all in the dumb but self-important character Delaney writes in. Instead its a collection of stories from a life thoroughly well lived, ranging from the ridiculous to the heartbreaking, particularly when he openly talks about his alcoholism, serious car crash and time in rehab and a halfway house. Its always funny but the candid nature took me by surprise and I genuinely found myself adoring this book. Plus for Twitter fans, its full of his favourite Tweets between each story. Also: the phrase "Twitter fans" makes me feel grubby. Ugh.

Oh Rob, how I love you. How I sincerely appreciate every single word that is printed on these pages. This review is going to become an ode to my love for Rob Delaney and his hilarious stories compiled in this book. It's funny, really really adorable, heartwarming, sometimes kind of uncomfortably disgusting, and so SO good. This surely isn't a good review because it's really hard for me to find the words to describe how much I sincerely enjoyed this book and the honesty inside of it.Thank you for writing this gem and letting me have something that I really never get tired of reading over and over again.
