Rocket écrit Une Histoire (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

Summary:Rocket Writes a Story is a book about a dog named Rocket and his teacher, "the little yellow bird." The book begins by having Rocket and the little yellow bird talking about how much they love books and words. Rocket goes in search of new words and they place all the words they find in a collection on a tree. Upon looking at all the words, Rocket decides he is going to write a story but he finds he has a very hard time starting the writing process. Rocket's teacher (the little yellow bird) helps him come up with ways to start a story. She tells him stories need good characters. She also says that stories can be about something you enjoy, something that has happened to you, or something that inspires you. So, Rocket searches for inspiration and finds things around him to write about: pine needles, feathers, an owl. Rocket takes his time writing a story, takes breaks to search for more inspiration and eventually succeeds in writing a lovely story about his new friend, owl.Evaluation:Rocket is a lovable, sweet character. Children can relate to rocket as he begins to see and understand new words. Children can also sympathize with him as they struggle with their own abilities to write stories. This story would be perfect to use before introducing writing workshop to kindergarten or first grade students. This book really celebrates the process of story writing and learning and would be an excellent book to read to younger children who are just starting to read and write. The author also creates the little yellow bird to serve as a teacher and through that relationship, you are able to see the power of a teacher to change lives. Additionally, the artwork and illustrations are clear and easy to follow. They provide a cute, child-like dog and bird for children to enjoy and relate to. Questions:1. Can you recall a time when you tried to write a story or a note to someone and struggled to do so? How did that make you feel? Did anyone help you?2. Take a peek at the conversation tree in the book. How many words are you able to recognize? Could you create a story using these words?3. Rocket's teacher gives him some great advice. What do you think will happen now?4. How do you think this story will end?5. Who has helped you when you have been stuck? Rocket is an unusual dog who loves books. One day he decides he wants to make his own story, but he is having bad writers block and can not come up with anything. His friend the little yellow bird encourages him to open his eyes and look for inspiration. One day he comes across this timid baby owl and gets an idea what to write about. The baby owl becomes his friend and the story gets finished! This is a book that I would definitely have in my classroom. It is perfect for students who might have trouble coming up with a topic to write about and has a really cute ending.
