Romulus Buckle & The Engines Of War (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
Wonderful, fast paced read. There were enough plot twists and intriguing scenes to keep the most jaded reader interested. The world of Romulus Buckle was so alive and vibrant I could feel the chill of the snow on the tip of my nose. I can't wait for the next one.My only hang up was that I was fifty pages or more in and wondering when we were going to get to the meat of the story, when the purpose of this tale would reveal itself. Although perplexed it didn't keep me from reading on. A fast-paced, action-packed steampunk-with-aliens story that is refreshingly not set in Victorian London (but still contains the expected stereotypical portrayal of corsets. *sigh*). An intriguing plot at an action-movie pace that sometimes gets bogged down by an abundance of zeppelin technical details and shouted-then-repeated orders to the crew, and more named minor characters than one can reasonably be expected to keep track of (wait, who just got eaten by a sky monster? was I supposed to know who that was?). Intrigued by the ending. It has some flaws, but also potential as an interesting series.
