Sam Und Emily: Kleine Geschichte Vom Glück Des Zufalls (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
“Sam and Riddle have been moving erratically from place-to-place with their mentally unstable father as long as they can remember. For both of them, this is just a part of life, and where they are (or aren’t) has never made much of a difference… until Sam meets Emily Bell. Then everything matters. Instead of a typical teen romance, this is a story of survival. This book was such a pleasant surprise!” —Veronica at KDL’s Krause Memorial branch I had never heard of this book until I saw it in the library. The first time I did not take it, the second time either, but the third time I figured: if I’ll keep running into it, I might as well read it. The story is about Sam Border and his little brother Riddle. They travel across the country with their criminal and mentally unstable father. They have a rather strange way of living. When Sam falls in love with Emily, an ordinary girl, he realizes that they can no longer continue living as their father wishes. This touching story is told from different point of views. In the beginning I liked it, but in the middle it started to bother me. I prefer being in someone head so I can feel one with the character. In the end the various POVs made sense. All the characters, every action they’ve ever undertaken, are connected. Everyone contributes to the fate of Sam and Riddle.I didn’t find the book a page-turner, but that’s okay. It’s easy to read and a great story to tell. The love story of Sam and Emily goes pretty fast, but that was necessary to get to the core: their survival strength and confidence in each other. There is a sequel, Just Call My Name. I find that this book does not need a sequel, but I’ve read nothing but positive stories, so I’m curious.
