Excellent series, excellent author. This is the best fantasy book/series I have read in a VERY long time. The characters are well drawn out, there is good development in many of them, and my favorite part is that Pehov changes some things around in his world that "mix-it up" a little regarding elves, orcs, dwarves, goblins, gnomes and ogres (I don't think I have forgotten anyone else....). Eminently readable and very satisfying. And the lead character, Shadow Harold, is fabulous. I can't recommend this book enough to anyone who enjoys fantasy novels. Let me preface this review with the fact that I listened to the audiobook. I am fully aware that lousy readers can kill an otherwise great book just as a good reader can make a poor work tolerable or even good. I believe in this case, there was an excellent reader that made this book into something very enjoyable for me. I will not even try to begin to argue with those who did not enjoy the book. Everyone has different tastes. They didn't like it. I did. I found an interesting parallel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy in certain ways. Several of my most favorite books or series have the same theme. There is a major quest to be undertaken to save the world. An unlikely hero is chosen to save said world and is to be accompanied by a varied group of companions. What makes a story like Shadow Prowler and its' following books successful in MY eyes, is the interaction and relationships developed between the individuals in the group. Each character is given his or her own special personality and is developed quite naturally throughout the story. A good book to me, makes me feel the emotions of the characters and I believe Shadow Prowler delivers sending me on the beginnings of an epic journey.
What do You think about Schattenwanderer (2002)?
It is a very good book. The city in the book reminded me of Ankh-Morpork from the Discworld books.

I couldn't bear to finish this book. Life is too short to read books you don't enjoy. BEN
