Schizo – Trau Niemandem. Vor Allem Nicht Dir Selbst (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

I first discovered Nic Sheff when his dad, David, wrote the book, "Beautiful Boy" about his son's struggles with addiction. Nic then wrote two autobiographies: "We All Fall Down" and "Tweak." This is Nic's first foray into fiction, and it's pretty solid YA lit.Miles has schizophrenia, and he's figuring out his high school life with his new diagnosis. Some friends have stuck by him, while others seem preoccupied with rumors around his sickness. Miles's younger brother Teddy was abducted at the beach years ago when Miles had his first episode. Now Miles is convinced he's the only one capable of finding Teddy. The voices in his head give him confidence and a strong sense of superiority.Set in San Francisco, Miles embarks on a journey to reunite his family and not let his illness get the best of him.Strong writing, realistic characters and a solid moving plot. Lots of language and some sexual situations, probably best for 8th grade and up. I got to say that the only reason I picked up this book was because of the cover. I mean look at that 3D gloriousness! (although the face isn't that bad either ;D )Really, though, I was REALLY surprised (I would have bolded that but I dunno, too much effort...and I dunno how to do it :/ ). The book was GOOD (italicize that in you head, would ya?). It was, sure, not great for some people, but in my personal opinion, I thought it was pretty nice. In all honesty, it would've been a 4.5, buuuuut, whatever. There so many twists and turns, and the pace was completely erratic and strange, which while appeals to many, doesn't appeal to lot others.I think it helps that the author, Nic Sheff, has been through his own troubles and can make the character, in this case Miles, more relatable and realistic. It just makes it better. Now, Miles is just a guy which some issues; it's all good, yeah? Okay, maybe he has a little more than some issues; he's got a crap ton of issues that all connect to his little brother, Teddy, who's been missing ever since that one time. That one thing. AND he blames the loss of Teddy on himself, because of that one thing. AND THAT ENDING, ughhhh. It was just... I can't even begin to explain.. it just needs to be read. Obviously this book was directed to YA readers, so on adults' levels, it's not going to be as great as it was in my opinion. But, I highly recommend you to at least try this out because you never know. (Most of y'all are probably gonna hate the writing, think it's too much crap, etc. anyways) ○ illusions ○ are ○ my ○ reality ○
