Süße Küsse Für Den Earl (Duke's Obsession, #2) (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
Ruh-Roh Shaggy... this one has me a little confused and I would LOVE anyone else who's read it to please give me your opinion here.Just to get it out of the way, this wasn't at all as strong as the first book in the series. The characters weren't as detailed and the storyline was REALLY similar to the first one in tempo and pacing. That being said... someone, seriously, someone tell me what's up with the guys in this story?! There's this whole group of straight men who are constantly hugging, and rubbing each other's necks, and laying their heads on each others shoulders. In the first book I thought it was sweet because they were brothers and they were going through stuff. In this book it was almost gratuitous... Devlin and his friend Douglas are shirtless and hugging, shirtless and laying their heads on each others chests, shirtless crying, etc, etc. I'm totally down for men falling in love with other men, but they were straight and so the touchy-feely stuff just threw me off. Also Devlin and his brother Val are really physical... they literally lay on a blanket in the meadow with "his head on the other's stomach" crying and reading old letters. I'm all for closeness amongst siblings but tell me what brothers do this? It was just odd.Lastly, I know I'm not the only one who said this but what was up with the heroine crying her way through the book and constantly being about to start her period??? If you're considering a Burrowes book, I'd go with The Heir instead. The second book in Ms. Burroughs series I found moved my heart more than her first. Not only did this book touch on the undying sacrifices mothers will do for their children but it also addressed the horrors men face in times of war. Married to a military family, with a son in the navy reserves and living in a military town I know the sacrifices men and women face as their loved ones go off to serve their country. I see firsthand what the ones left behind must deal with, the fears, sacrifices, the loss of time and the difficulties when their loved ones return. This story weaves a wonderful love story between two tortured souls and as often is the case it is the innocence of the child that reveals the truth the adults to blind to see. From the first page to the last you will be moved, your heart strings touched and you will remember the characters long after the book is replaced on the shelf.
