Se Niente Importa. Perché Mangiamo Gli Animali? (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
Very interesting and fun to read, but how can you in good conscience decide that eating animals is wrong and consuming dairy is not? The dairy industry practices are at least as disturbing, if not more so. The question should at the very least have been raised in the book, which it sadly isn't; vegans and veganism are mentioned a couple of times, but they're thrown together with vegetarians and vegetarianism. This is one of those books comes along on an extended lazy weekends and gives you enough 'food' for thought that you carry along in your cerebrum for weeks. A fight with morality, rationality and a question for universal compassion takes over your mind. A question of what humanity is capable of and what we are actually doing to this rich, beautiful world and to the co-inhabitants of this great planet. The pages are filled with hard, cold facts involved in the processes employed by factory farms. The farms which are converted into this noxious corporate juggernaut. The narrative emerges as an informative and yet interesting, giving you timely chills. The title of this book gives an impression that it might be one of those books that parades the ideology of Animal Rights and coerces the idea of vegetarianism, but it is not entirely so.Throughout its entirety, it never sounds preachy or pretentious. The facts, I would say, is the central field of this book and the morality of it is on the periphery, just enough to make you think for yourself. It gives you very lurid details about the meat industry, its operations and the treatment the animals receives there. The ideas of both Animal Rights and Animal Welfare are written about extensively too(they are not entirely absent) provided in the myriad eloquent first hand accounts from the real people involved in all circles of this gruesome industry. The scope of research that went into it is evident all across the length of the book. A good informative read, might just change your perception and mindset, for good!
