Season For Temptation (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

This book is sort of the Platonic form of romance novels. Not that it's the best one, just that it's one of the most romance novel-y romance novels I've ever read. There's a hero and a heroine. There's a reasonably compelling reason they can't be together. They love each other anyway. There's misunderstandings, there's people trying to keep them apart, there's a drunken make-out session in a closed carriage. I want to make this book a drinking game, and it still made me have all the feels. I tried so hard to give this a chance but I just couldn't get into it. DNF. The characters seemed flat and unrealistic. Their interactions were always painfully awkward. They kept being amused and charmed at each other while I felt left out of the joke. The family was beyond silly just in terms of common sense, topics under discussion at dinner, the way they greeted and treated their guest, the fact that one of the daughters is running about with no attempt at gentility. I also disliked the descriptive headings on each chapter that tell you what will happen, I have never been fond of those. Nothing and no one seemed natural or realistic. The sister engaged to the hero was just strange in terms of her neoroses, I didn't understand what on earth her problem was! I quit for good when I got to this line- “Fortunately, James was a kind man, and he’d been willing to accept her wishes even though they probably sounded lame to him.”It was the final straw for me amidst the general surfeit of anachronistic behavior, descriptions and thinking. I find it very unlikely people went around saying "That sounds so lame!" back then. I think the word would more likely have been reserved to mean a cripple (excuse my lack of political correctness). The writing isn't bad, so some may find they like it. I do know I personally dislike the author's voice. It felt like a task trying to read it. And I liked none of the characters by chapter 5.
