Second Suns: Two Doctors And Their Amazing Quest To Restore Sight And Save Lives (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

I'm embarrassed to say I had no idea 160 people on earth are either blind or vision-impaired; I'm shocked to say that 3/4 of these cases are fixable, if the infrastructure and resources were in place. SECOND SUN Is a fascinating story about doctors doing extraordinary work removing cataracts in developing nations for less than $25 a patient, in some of the most inhospitable places on earth. It takes a couple of pages to get up and running but keep going, it's worth it. The writer spent four years traveling with the Nepalese and the American doctors who have created the Himalaya Cataract Project and the work shows; it's a carefully recorded labor of love. I'm obliged to note that David Relin was the co-writer on THREE CUPS OF TEA, which means I'm naturally a little suspicious that this is the God's honest truth, but I'm assuming any publisher is going to be over vigilant about fact-checking now. This is a wonderful and inspiring book. The amazing story of surgeons in remote areas curing cataract blindness and other types of eye problems that are easily cured in the U.S. but cause widespread blindness in third world countries. The surgeons are such interesting characters and their desire to help people is incredibly admirable. The book is well written and is a page turner. Thoroughly enjoyed this book. A terrific book.
