Secrets In The Cellar (A True Story Of The Austrian Incest Case That Shocked The World) (A True Story Of The Austrian Incest Case That Shocked The World) (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

The most terrible crime ever. No serial killer but about the man who kept his daughter in a dungeon for 24 years. His daughter had 5 children by him and he would bring her books on childbirth and tell her he didn't want to watch the disgusting process so she did it alone, cutting the umbilical cord. He brought two upstair to raise because he claimed the daughter had run off with some cult and left the babies on their doorstep. His daughter wept, not being able to spend much time with those babies she nursed until they could be weaned. She had twins, one of which died and the father/granddfather promptly dumped the baby into the furnace. I wondered what the children thought watching this monster rape their mother thousands of time. It's so unbelievable that I can't even think of a fictitious story that could come close to it's ugliness. I think he got 15 years. That's the max sentence for murder in Austria. The prosecution worked hard to get consecutive sentences for multiple rapes and murders. He may have been killed by now since prisoners hate men who murder women or abuse, rape or torture children. The daughter he first locked up didn't excite him anymore so he began grooming the oldest "little grandchild" for his sex slave. Since it first hit rhe news there were more rooms found. It was a complex dungeon. By the way, another thing he did to debase his daughter and her children was make them dig a new area and he shored it up and built it. The children had no tools. He had them dig out entire areas latge enough for rooms by hand. It's actually much worse than I've written. This was one of the most appalling crimes I have ever read about. Imagine being raped 3,000 by your father, giving birth to 7 children alone in a dungeon with no fresh air, sunlight or medical care. Watching your one child’s body thrown into the incinerator by your father, after the baby died of complications and so much more. How is Elizabeth still sane???From a factual standpoint it was fascinating, as I knew only the bare facts of this horrific crime when it made worldwide news. However the book is in dire need of some good editing. There was a lot of repetition to the point that whole paragraphs seemed to have just been copied word for word throughout the book and that is the reason I have given the book only 3 stars.I also enjoyed learning about the baffling Austrian legal system and how completely arrogant Fritzl was when he was finally arrested. This is a quick, if sickening, true crime novel that will leave you utterly speechless at the depravity of Josef Fritzl.

Good book but kind of creepy. You're really not sure what happens to the father.
