Shadow Wolf (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

The beginning mistake was pathetic. Otherwise it would have been 5 stars, but that first little bit is pathetic, absolutely stupid. Especially compared to how smart he was in the first book, that just made no sense. However, aside from that, it's a pretty good book and is definitely worth your time if you don't mind skipping to the second or third chapter. It is relatively unique - not many books take a wolf's perspective, excellent writing, excellent congruity (matches up with the first book almost perfectly except for the beginning), and definitely worth your time. Book Review: This book is about a gnaw wolf (a wolf that was abandoned because of a deformity and is left to die, but finds a pack) named Faolan, who spent the first year of his life with a grizzly. A gnaw wolf is the lowest raking wolf in a pack. They are nipped, they eat last, and their job in hunting is to sniff scat and gnaw the bones of the animals the clan/pack kills. On top of all that, there is this other gnaw wolf, named Heep, who wants Faolan to leave the pack. On one of the biggest hunts Faolan decides to run in front of the group and accidentally messes up the order of the clan. All of the wolves are mad at him for ruining it for them except the chieftain. While the chieftain is talking to him he announces there will be a gaddergnaw, which is a competition (that hadn't been held in years) to find the best gnaw wolf (or wolves) to give them the honor of being part of The Watch of the Sacred Volcanoes. Right before the gaddergnaw, Faolan found a malcadh (a deformed pup) left out to die. Faolan wanted to help the malchadh, but it was against the rules of the clans. After he leaves, Heep decides to murder the malcadh so he can blame it on Faolan. In the middle of the gaddergnaw Heep accuses Faolan (because the punishment is death and because Heep knew he had no chance of winnng against Faolan). Fortunately, Faolan's owl friend and the wolf “witch” knew that it wasn't Faolan and Faolan's friends had heard and seen Heep's noticed tooth that clearly was on the bones, so Heep was guilty. In the end Faolan and another gnaw wolf were selected as Wolves of the Watch.Recommendation:I would recommend this book to people who love to read books about animals. This book is great for people who would like to read about a wolf that seems part wolf and part bear. If you liked reading this book I would suggest to read the rest of the series.
