I thought this book was a lot of fun and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I read it with a 7th grade student that I am tutoring, and she (it's not just a boy book!) loved it as well. I like the underwater world that E.J. Altbacker created, complete with its own mythology/history and systems of organization, and I laughed at a lot of the shark/ocean slang he used. The story is engaging and there are good points for discussion as well, from friendship and loyalty to making good decisions to what it means to be a leader. My only complaint is that I thought the climactic last battle scene was over a little too quickly and then all of a sudden Altbacker was setting up the next book. I would have liked a bit more resolution to this story before starting to think about the next story. Shark Wars was a good read that I could relate to. The main character Gray is a shark who is a young shark who has a big appetite. Everyone in his village thinks of him as a trouble maker because his appetite sometimes gets the better of him and he hunts outside of the village, which is forbidden. One day he he hunts outside of the village and Atlas, the leader of the village puts him on trial and banishes Gray from the village. I can sometimes relate to Gray because sometime I do things that I don't realize are things that I would get me in trouble, but I do. I would recommend this book to middle and high school students because they can relate to adults always getting on their case for little things.
