She's Dating The Gangster Movie Tie-In (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

I don't really know what to say. There are too many things happening in the book which I think is unnecessary. The book has some ups but most of the time I skipped pages. Maybe, because I have read the unedited version pero hindi rin e. :( Honestly, I love tragic endings/stories but, this just didn't got me. And I was really disappointed with the emoticons? What's with that? There's also no proper transition of scenes. :( But, it was published and even got a film version (which I love) so? it's just me? Maybe, the last part when Athena wished Kenji will join her... It made me sad, maybe because I have a different perspective on such things. Good but not the best.I've read an equal amount of bad and good reviews so I think I might as well give my views about this. Although I have yet to read the published book, I read the wattpad version almost 3 years ago and reread it recently just 'cause of its popularity in the Philippines. I was 14 when I first read it and thought that this was the best filipino online story I've read regardless of the poor style of writing and the obnoxious use of emoticons. I even reread it two more times in the same year because I couldn't let the emotions I felt while reading it go. 3 years after, I decided to read it again recently because I was disappointed by the movie adaptation. After reading it again for the first time after 3 years, I still like it, although not as much as when I was 14. Anyway, let me tell you what I thought of this story after reading it for the 4th time. To be fair, I will write 2 pros and 2 cons.PROS:It had so many plot twists. I enjoyed the fact that it had so many twists. The story gradually changed so much. First they hated each other, then they loved, then hated, then loved. It was entertaining for me even though it was lengthy (50 chapters). It was funny, irritating, heart breaking, silly, unrealistic, and it was passionate. I had mixed feelings after reading this story. It had a closure. The greatest reason why I really liked this book was because it had the cheesy parts that gave me "kiligs" then a bittersweet ending that gave me a closure. It was not the typical chick flick teen romance (i.e. boy meets girl then a happy ending for everyone) you can buy in a bookstore. Yes, they both died, how tragic - hence, a Romeo and Juliet fan fiction. I won't lie, I always bawl my eyes out every time I read it. However, after reading it for so many times, I had a realization. The ending was dark but somehow realistic. This might make me sound like a sadist but I thought that the author made a good decision to let them both die in the end. Why? It was because dying is the end of all. In fact, the two of them dying together served as a happy ending for them - although not happy for their loved ones. As a reader, I liked it because it didn't make me crave for a continuation. It ended. I was satisfied.CONS:It had little to no art. I haven't noticed it when I was 14 but this time, I thought that the author did a so-so job writing it. Writing, specially fiction writing, is an art. A writer should draw a picture using words to let his/her readers see what's inside his/her mind. SGWannabe (Bianca Bernardino) was certainly not a good writer. She can write, but not that good. She didn't describe thoroughly what was in the setting. She didn't describe what her characters looked like, she only said that they were pretty and handsome. Although she added Kenji's earings and stuff, it was not enough. There were little to no sensory details used. No picture. I didn't have a clear image in my mind so I needed to use an existing person (a celebrity) to give me visuals. It was a frustrating process whenever a new character was being introduced. I would be fair to her though and say that she wrote the characters' lines effectively that it brought me into tears. If she also did a sloppy job on that, I would have given this story 1 star. The mechanics were poor. There were many grammatical errors, mispelled words and emoticons. I also disliked the fact that it had korean language in it. Sure, a trilingual book was an incredible idea but she didn't incorporate those languages properly. I didn't understand the value of having excessive korean parts then having translated it literally with "[]" right away after each part. I mean, she could've translated it in a more interesting way. It was as if she just bragged about her knowledge of korean language and culture. Terrible, terrible job. I understand that not so many people have perfect grammar, so I let that one slide. But for god's sake! Spelling? Seriously? She could've looked it up on the dictionary or online. Even most of the tagalog words were mispelled. The emoticons had me, though. I hated it so much that I can't even write my hate in words. All in all, I will give this story a 3 star rating. I was satisfied and was entertained but I didn't really like how SGWannabe wrote it. I will try to get a copy of the book when I get back to the Philippines, see what's the difference between the two, and will probably write a new review. As far as the online version is concerned, I will probably read it again sometime in the future just to entertain myself.
