I'm not a book worm, I just read for pleasure, to kill time or to have something to do during weekends instead of staring at the ceiling. I have to search those authors she mentioned like Beauvoir, Sartre, and Maupassant just to understand what the author really means. Felt quite ashamed cause most of the books I read are "badly written novels about nice girls and boys falling in love, who make each other suffer without meaning to". :D Got suckered into reading this cos the title and premise were so alluring. But the only good thing I can say about it is it's short. The lead character's a rambly old French librarian, fine. But what bugs me is the inconsistency of her rambling. First the dewey decimal system is an epic invention, the cornerstone of civilisation. Then it's a horrible invention, a mincer. Libraries are marvellous places. Not they're not. Oh I'm a shy person who doesn't speak up. Er you're talking the ear off a complete stranger - that's the whole premise of your book! Yeesh. A couple of nice turns of phrases and pretty insights about French history and literature don't make up for the sloppy rest of the book
What do You think about Signatura 400 (2010)?
Interesting and unique, funny but extremely poignant. It's only 95 pages long ... give it a go!
