Simply Sexual (2008) - Plot & Excerpts

I won this book in an online giveaway. It's not my usual genre, but I did like the mix of naughtiness and history that it promised. It turned out to be a genre that I want to get more into after reading this book. Pearce keeps you guessing as she builds the characters throughout the book and the sex scenes are sure to curl your toes. I cannot wait to get my hands on the other books in this series, as well as the other books that she has written. She finds the perfect combination of sex and story line to keep me coming back for more! I've read two of the "Simply" series, and both of them have left me cold, which is not what I look for in an erotic romance. In Simply Sexual, heroine Sara is married off to hero Valentin, once a slave in a Turkish brothel. Valentin is unsurprisingly damaged by his past experiences, but it's nothing that the love of a good woman, who also happens to be willing to participate in threesomes and attend racy sex clubs, can't overcome, right? Unfortunately, many of the hotter moments felt stiff, reduced to a description of movements - Valentin did A, then performed B, than C - without building tension or amplifying emotions. Sometimes the sex scenes were actually a little boring because there was so little description about how the characters felt about what the other was doing; the writing doesn't reveal what's going on in their heads. The actual sex acts are wonderfully racy, but you'd hardly know it based on how the characters respond. When a character is damaged, as Pearce's are, some emotional reserve is just true to character, but it went to such an extent that I had no investment in their happy ending. The hero had a bad past, but he also seemed to be just fine without the heroine, and I wasn't convinced that her presence in his life was actually going to help him. I also wasn't sure what Sara got out of the deal that couldn't have been fulfilled by a similarly amorous young man. A classic "show me, don't tell me" miss with this book.
