Skinwalker Fluch Des Blutes (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
3.5 - 4 starsI was recently introduced in this series (thanks for the rec, Skandia!) and I'm totally hooked. The second installment in the Jane Yellowrock series was nearly as good as the first one and provided a lot of info about vampire culture. Jane takes another job in New Orleans to hunt those creating rogue vampires, so the vampires we met at the first book are here, plus her witches friends and foes. The romance aspect in the book was rather disappointing. The cover is awful but the narrator Khristine Hvam is awesome. In this book Jane uses her skills to hunt down the vampire responsible creating rogue vamps in order to destabilise the New Orleans clans. If I'm honest I have to say I am a little disappointed. I really enjoyed book 1. I thought the pace was great, the characters interesting with a lot of promise and the world different enough to be engaging. There is lots of new mythology here which is quite fun but the fundamental issue for me was that the characters never moved on. Jane inexplicably seems to withdraw rather than develop. Logically, she has undergone new rituals, learned more about Beast, discovered more about the vamp world, got her best friend and children to move in with her, and deepened her relationship with a number of individuals. Yet she felt more distant in book 2 and that seemed to be more to do with the writing than with some kind of bigger story arc. Some of the information thrown out by Hunter was illogical, disjointed or even conflicting, particularly in relation to what Jane did or didn't share about the vamps, their strength and how she used her skinwalker magic. (In the last book, Jane missed a vital clue by not visiting Gregoire's clan when invited, she does exactly the same here with Bettina.) Jane discovers a new powerful 'change', but doesn't use it; why? I also felt that her supporting characters( with the exception of Bruiser) were significantly underdeveloped. And why would you not use powerful witchy friends to help you when hostile magic is involved? So I'll probably try book 3 but I have a suspicion that may be as far as I go.
