General Bragg of the Confederate forces is struggling with insubordination in his company as starvation becomes the norm for most. Veteran narrator Paul Michael easily navigates the vocal transitions from generals to foot soldiers. He shoulders Bragg’s smooth Southern drawl, General Patrick Cleburne’s slight Irish brogue, and General Grants careless gruff tones with ease. Michael’s greatest strengths shine as he carefully recreates the emotions and inner reflections of the men who serve their countries. The battles themselves are not the focus as much as tension filled dialogues in the tents that determine the fates of thousands. Civil War readers will eagerly listen to Shaara’s newest installment as he takes them on another breathless war adventure. The continuation of Shaara's Civil War in the West series follow the aftermath of the Confederate victory at Chickamauga. As the Confederate's lay siege to the Union in Chattanooga, the book covers the infighting in the Confederate camp as the Generals rebel against Braxton Bragg. It covers the shake up in the Union Forces as US Grant arrives to take charge and General Rosecrans is replaced by General Thomas.
