His house backed a few acres of forest; the towering trees provided shade and protection from the dusting rainstorm that had blanketed the city the last few days. She hadn’t talked to Carter much since Paisely had shown up. He’d made it sound like they were long over, with no hope of getting back together from either side. But he’d been mistaken.
