Different and fun! Mackenzie and Brian get into a fake engagement to help him with his public personna, after having several ex-girlfriends rip him off in the tabloids. This is a normal, frequently used plot. What makes this book different and fun is that Mackenzie doesn't like him all that much, and hates his rich and charming playboy image. She's Brian's best salesperson and she's very competitive, so the book is all about them trying to up the other. Then it is about Brian trying to charm his way into her bed and Mackenzie busting his chops keeping him out. Very entertaining and fun. The hero is utterly charming. The heroine is immune to charm. She's one of the few women who can see beyond the surface to see the real man underneath (the real man is actually charming and kind, but he's also selfish and used to getting his way). When the hero finds himself facing a tabloid nightmare he pays the heroine to pretend to be engaged to him for six weeks to get the paparazzi off his back (and hopefully silent all the ex girl friends). The story made me laugh. The only thing for me that loses it a five star rating for me is the fact they end up sleeping together before they know they love each other (they're just using each other). If that doesn't bother you, you'll probably find it a five star. For me that killed the sexual tension. I think it would have been better if they'd waited till after they knew they loved each other (because they are already falling in love with each other they just don't know it). I may be picky, but that's just me. I'll definitely read it again and I think it well worth the money. I also love how Bryce weaves some lovely morals into the story...the most obvious is about charm when used as a tool to get one's way.
What do You think about Some Like It Charming (2000)?
Good, fun, summer romance. A little racy but with a decent storyline, too.
