Somebody Everybody Listens To (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
A really cute book, filled with southern/country flavor and bleeding with love for the music. There are a few great secondary characters too, and a thoughtful family subplot. It was a little hard to swallow a girl heading out to Nashville on her own without so much as having looked up a motel, and there was a whole lot of reliance on the kindness of strangers that tipped over into unrealistic levels, and the ending felt a little abrupt, but I also liked the fair share of struggles she experienced and the amount of passion she had for what she was doing. A nice, light, fun read. I only like "old timey" country music, but somehow this sweet tale of Retta Lee Jones, a small town girl following her dreams to Nashville grabbed my heart and turned me into a believer. The outstanding writing and brief biographies grabbed me. I can't see any straight man reading this book EVER, but I dare you all to not be touched by this tale. Thank you book group - since I would never have picked this up on my own!
