Song Of Spider-Man: The Inside Story Of The Most Controversial Musical In Broadway History (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
There are more than enough fascinating anecdotes about the disastrous Spider-Man musical to keep you turning the page, but the biggest—and most revealing—flaw of the book is the quality of Berger's writing. Perhaps he's better at writing screenplays or books for musical (though Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark would suggest otherwise), but here the writing is often stilted and awkward and Berger—particularly in his relationship with the press—comes across as someone who enjoys presenting himself as a victim of, and that gets very old very fast. A very detailed picture of the long slow process of getting the Spider-Man musical onstage, the perils, the difficulties, the arguments, the refusals to compromise, and much more. Vividly written, and with as much charity as possible in the circumstances. Berger's own role in the proceedings, as co-author of the book, was frustrating in the extreme, and made more frustrating when Julie Taymor, the original director and co-writer was finally fired after endless delays and a seeming inability to deal with the problems of the show. It's good to see that at the end of the book there's a reconciliation between Taymor and Berger, but the journey had cost them both enormously.
