A good, almost great entry in the Hap and Leonard series by the great Mr. Lansdale. This one was fantastic until about page 190. It seemed like it was reaching a logical conclusion, the situations and characters were great and semi-believable and then there is kind of a weak 50 page or so climax that feels like it was tacked on. After the car bombing, Hap and Leonard go out to Arizona to visit Brett and decide to go back to Texas and hunt down the hit woman who killed Tonto and the kids. The scene in Arizona feels so forced and unbelievable and cheapened Brett's character. She's totally supportive of Hap and Leonard going after the hit woman, it just doesn't ring true after all the shit they've done and been through. There could have been many ways to resolve this story without this somewhat tacked on, sorta cheap feeling climax. Vanilla Ride and the Dixie Mafia think they are dead, so why not have them try to go back to living in LaBorde and have their cover blown and have Vanilla Ride and the mafia and the crooked cops come after them? Just an idea, but I think it would have made for a better read than the climax presented here. The very end is pretty good, I just thought the whole book was great up until the final 50 pages or so, when it takes a turn into truly unbelievable territory. That said, if you have read the other Hap and Leonard books, you will enjoy it. Lansdale never truly disappoints, he just pitches a few balls and fouls during an otherwise fantastic day on the mound here. What can I say but, WOW! This one will have you on the edge of your seat. Needless to say Hap and Leonard piss of some big bads, of course said big bads underestimate just how big and bad Hap and Leonard can be. All of it starts because of a favor and two guys doing the right thing. Brilliant writing and much action and tension ensues. Read this one quick, because the next one is even better!
