Well - at times I thought this was ok - but then I had to get real. With all the great books out there it is hard to waste time/money on average books (and some of LLM books are really good) This one wasn't.The one thing I liked was the relationship between Hutch and Slade - pity they are brothers.First the Hero barely talked - he just did these half grin things with his lips. Some communication wouldn't hurt!!!Second this book just didn't flow - there was so much talk about the cat (and its pregnancy) through the first half of the book and then it was never mentioned again - WTFAnd third ... who has sex ONCE and then sees each other everyday to go horse riding over the next THREE months and doesn't do it again...what type of book is this.I actually own the next two in this series and am thinking of giving them to the rotary book sale I'm on a western kick right now, which is what lead to my downloading this title from Audible.com. I suspect it might be slightly better read as an actual text than it was as an audiobook, but it's still problematic. The author is strong on descriptions. She has some lovely passages about scenery. The big problems in this story come with the plot and the characterization. The names are ridiculous, but it's a romance novel so that's sort of a genre expectation. The story centers on the romance between Slade and Jocelyn. A great deal of build-up goes into Jocelyn's back story, how she ends up the pariah of the small Montana town, yet that status is not satisfactorily dealt with by the end of the novel. In fact, it's just dropped. Perhaps it'll come up again in the obviously forthcoming next two books of this trilogy. That was another bothersome part of this book, the overt hinting at a trilogy about three attractive and unattached heroines. The author actually includes a scene where these three women clink wine glasses and feel a 'thrum of anticipation' about their lives intertwining. Uh, yeah, thanks for the sledgehammer of a hint. But I digress. We're talking about characters.Jocelyn is a successful computer programmer who, quite understandably decides to remedy her family's sins, but unexplainably decides to move back to the hometown that rejected her. It's really not clear why she does this. Even the character herself questions why she did this and doesn't come to a satisfactory decision. It's just a forced bit of plotting that feels uncomfortable and weird. In addition, even though she is a video game designer and code monkey, she never once comments on any of the computer games Slade's daughter plays nor does she offer any computer assistance to anyone she cares about. For anyone who has ever known a programmer, it's also strange that she doesn't complain about people asking her to fix their computers. This is shallow characterization. These traits are stated but lack verisimilitude because of the failure to weave any resultant behavior choices into the story.The most unintentionally comical character in the book is Sheriff Slade Barlow. In the story, he considers running for re-election, and if he had, I know exactly what his campaign slogan would have been: Slade Barlow- hard, fast, deep. Everything Slade does is hard, fast, and deep. He drives hard, fast, and deep. He rides horses hard, fast, and deep. He kisses Jocelyn hard, fast, and deep. He and Jocelyn have the predictable sexual tension- we readers know because every time they're in close proximity, we're told that they're feeling sexual tension. He buys her a horse, and she takes off her shirt. (That's a tip, boys; buy a girl a horse and you'll get lucky.) They have sex for hours, and then, in spite of Slade Barlow being the kind of cowboy who knows what he wants, all they do for the next ten weeks is go feed the horses together every morning. Not only is that uncharacteristic for a guy, that's weird for a woman. I mean, if the sex was that mind blowing, wouldn't Jocelyn have found a way to strip in front of this boy a second time? The problem is that the author set up a major plot event for ten weeks down the road and, instead of shifting the event to earlier in the timeline, she fast-forwards the story without any additional development in the relationship. Oddly the reverse problem happens less than 24 hours after the two characters sleep together; Jocelyn wonders why they haven't progressed further in the relationship. Yet it's only the morning after their marathon naked olympics. Overall, this one reads like a first draft, complete with the author's own musings about her writing ("I can't just keep calling you 'the cat.' You need a name."). I wish she'd spent more revision time on her plot and characterization than she had on polishing her imagery.

Es geht um Slade und seinen Halbbruder Hutch. Slade wurde mit einem Schlag reich, da sein Vater gestorben ist. Wobei man ihn nicht wirklich Vater nennen konnte. Über das Erbe war Slade recht erstaunt, da er dachte dass er seinem Vater nichts bedeutet. Durch das Erbe streiten sich Slade und Hutch noch mehr. Josyln kehrt wieder nach Parable zurück um vieles wieder gut zu machen was ihr Stiefvater Elliot kaputt gemacht hat.So nun kommen wir mal zu den wichtigsten Charakter in dieser Geschichte:Slade Barlow, er ist der Sheriff von Parable und nimmt seinen Beruf ernst. Wenn Slade was sagt, dann meint er es auch so.Hutch Carmody ist der Halbbruder von Slade, die beiden verstehen sich überhaupt nicht gut. Hutch wohnt auf der Ranch. John Carmody ist der Vater von Slade Barlow und Hutch Carmody,Callie Barlow die Mutter von Slade. Layne seine Ex-Frau sieht wie ein Topmodel aus. Shea ist die Stieftochter von Slade. Sie versteht sich gut mit ihm. Jasper, Johns Wachhund ist ziemlich anstrengend, da er nicht auf jeden hört. Joslyn wollte in Parable alles wieder gut machen, was Elliot kaputt gemacht. Sie traut sich nicht in Parable herumzulaufen da sie denkt das jeder ihr die Schuld geben könnte. Sie ist eine sehr nette Person. Elliot ist der Stiefvater von Joslyn und ein Trickbetrüger.Opal war die frühere Haushaltshilfe von Elliot, sie versteht sich super mit Joslyn. Kendra ist die beste Freundin von Joslyn und hat ziemlich viel TemperamentIch finde es immer schön wenn Slade Cowboy genannt wird. Die Autorin hat ihn super gut beschrieben und ich muss sagen, laut ihrer Beschreibung sieht er richtig gut aus. Wobei Hutch auch nicht von schlechten Eltern ist. Die Geschichte fesselt einen da man unbedingt wissen muss wie es mit Slade und Hutch oder mit Slade und Joslyn weitergeht. Putzig finde ich aber immer noch Shea und Jasper. Shea gibt sich bei ihrer Mutter zickig und bei ihren Stiefvater ist sie total anders. Generell würde ich sagen, diese Geschichte geht weit unter die Haut da man manchmal an die Zweifel und Entscheidungen der beiden Brüder denkt und überlegt ob es andere Möglichkeiten gegeben hätte. Es ist alles recht flüssig geschrieben und auch gefühlsvoll, dennoch aber auch sehr temperamentvoll, wenn ich da nur mal an Kendra denke.Mein Fazit für dieses Buch: Lest es! Dann lernt ihr die richtigen Cowboys und auchdie Geschichte über Slade und seine Freunde kennen.

Im Hintergrund ist ein schönes Farbenspiel der Sonne zu erkennen.Erster Satz:"Du warst nicht auf der Begräbnisfeier", fuhr Hutch Carmody seinen Halbbruder Slade Barlow an.Charaktere:Joslyn kommt nach Jahren mal wieder in ihre alte Heimat, um einiges wieder gut zu machen.Slade ist unglücklicher Sheriff, bis ihm sein Vater etwas vermacht.Hutch ist Slade's Halbbruder und war Vater's Liebling, deswegen passt es ihm nicht, dass Slade etwas geerbt hat. Meine Meinung:Ich bin mit etwas Vorsicht an das Buch ran gegangen, weil ich eine kitschige Ranch-Geschichte erwartet habe. Doch je mehr ich gelesen habe, desto mehr habe ich mich in das Buch verliebt.Das Buch ist voll von Tierliebe: Hunde, Katze und sogar Pferde! Doch auch das Knistern zwischen den Menschen ist deutlich spürbar und macht die Geschichte lebendiger. Die übertriebene Rivalität zwischen Hutch und Slade fand ich hin und wieder etwas nervig, aber manche Szenen haben dass dann wieder gut rausgerissen, vorallem weil die Autorin so lebhaft schreibt. Die Charaktere schließt man sofort ins Herz, man leidet und hofft mit ihnen. Bei diesem Buch bekommt man sofort selbst Lust einen Kurztrip in die eigene Heimat zu machen.Fazit:Ein geniales Buch für kuschelige Sonntage zuhause!
