I love everything else I've read by David Sedaris. This is really different. The dark side is significantly darker, to the extent that I reacted out loud to some of the violence in these stories. I like how they were sort of fable-like but the morals, if they have any, are not obvious. At first I thought I would not keep this book, but I decided I will keep it for a while because some of the stories, oddly enough, could be sermon illustrations and things like that. Edgar Allen Poe, take a back seat to Sedaris and his truly disturbing stories in this book. I think that the story of the Mouse and the Snake is the second most disturbing story I've read but it is far out done by the Motherless Bear. Enough to give animal lovers (or anyone for that matter) nightmares. It looked like it would be a children's book of animal tales but keep it away from kids unless you want to mess up their minds for life.!
What do You think about Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary (2010)?
So... I'm pretty sure I don't like this book... review to come when I figure it out.
