Stille Gefahr (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

If You See Her is a good story, intriguing plot, and great characters (main and auxilliary). If you like romantic suspense this is a good book. It is part 2 of 3 -- the romance for the main characters (Remy and Hope) is resolved but the mystery/bad guy is not. I'd highly suggest already having read book 1 (If You Hear Her) and have 3 (If You Know Her) on hand to finish out the story. I loved the pretense to the story and found it engaging, suspenseful, and exciting. Ms. Walker sure knows how to draw a character out of the page and make them seem so real to the reader. Disappointing sequel to what was a promising series. ****Spoilers and Ranting Within****My major issue with this book is the way the ex husband was brought into the story. Hope never ever ever questions how Joey found out she was in Ash. Remy never admits or acknowledges that his investigation and multiple calls to Joey brought him to Ash. Even AFTER Remy discovers how extensive and horrifying the abuse was he still calls Joey and informs him of Hope's current location. This coming from a self proclaimed defender of women and children against their abusers. I am a romance fan and am very familiar and ok with the idea if immediate attraction and the plots where interactions go from zero to a hundred on the sexual tension scale, but Hope's severe PTSD and numerous issues should still have given her a little more pause in starting a relationship with a guy she barely knows. My next major issue is one of lazy writing. Over and over and over again, she uses the same phrases to describe the tension and mood in town that stem from the ominous presence of the serial killer and his gruesome killings. Walker just has characters say and think about "all the crazy shit going on". That's it, adjectives and metaphors are your friend. I also had a big issue with the serial killer POV. His obsession with Hope mirrored Remy, Ezra, Law, and every other alpha male's protective instinct and opinions of Hope. Hope is singularly defined by her victims hood. Even when she has an iota of agency, it's taken fairly quickly an handily by the alpha male in her life, friend and for alike. I really wanted to like this series, and I was really invested in the mysteries and such introduced in the first book. However, there are some major alpha male and victim heroine issues that need working out.
