This book was fun and exciting to read. It's about a teen whose dad is a storm chaser. One day a really bad hurricane comes and the teen has to try to rescue his school bus and friends. He ends up taking refuge with a classmate (a girl) at her home/wildlife refuge. (The details are fuzzy because I read it a long time ago.)The only bad part is the ending--they are still in the middle of the storm at the end of the book! It's supposed to make you want to read the sequel, so if you're okay with that, enjoy! After his mother and sister are killed in an accident, Chase Masters and his father are trying to cope. One day Mr. Master's is struck by lightening. After that he becomes obsessed with storms. Eventually Chase and his dad sell their house, pack up the family and start a business structured around repairing storm damaged areas. They are "storm chasers."In this first book of the series, Chase and his dad head to Florida as a hurricane prepares to move through. They take up residence with a local family who run a circus part of the year and rest in Florida the rest of the time. On site with them are lions, tigers and bears. Oh my!His father travels a bit farther south, where he believes the hurricane will land. Chase remains behind with the circus family. He enrolls himself in school and tries to begin a routine. As the hurricane nears land Chase and the other students are sent home by bus or parent pick-up. Chase doesn't feel getting on the bus is the right thing to do.His gut feeling is right. The bus goes over a levy and Chase and 2 classmates are stranded. Chase uses the items in his emergency bag (required to be with him at all times by his father) to keep them safe. As the 3 kids navigate their way to civilization they encounter sliding earth, a rickety bridge they must cross and an enormous crocodile that is very much NOT DEAD!Eventually they encounter safety and are reunited with their families.A great adventure book of reluctant readers; especially boys.
