Strangers - Plot & Excerpts

Charlie thought it was more like slipping into periods of unconscious exhaustion. He was relieved to find they were back in bed and not on the floor but he ached. He had his arm wrapped around Kate, his leg between hers, her back pressed against his chest.“Oh God,” Charlie groaned.“Are we still alive? I thought we’d killed one another.”“It’s the only way I want to die. You—” He paused and then whispered in her ear, “You’re not thinking about killing yourself, are you?”“My capacity—for thought—destroyed—you—have.”“Funny girl.”“I can’t feel my legs.” Kate let out a long moan.Charlie’s fingers ran along the top of her thigh. “Don’t worry. Still there and they feel lovely.”As his hand wandered lower, the door buzzer made them jump. Kate banged her head into Charlie’s chin.“Ignore it.” He blinked tears from his eyes. But whoever was outside didn’t give in.“It’s probably Lucy. I’ll go and shut her up.”Kate rolled over, swung her feet off the bed and stumbled naked out of the room.
