Subterranean Gallery (2016) - Plot & Excerpts

Now he sat on his stool in front of his worktable, several blocks of moist clay laid out before him. Light entered the room from the large window to his right and from the skylight above.
The room sat atop the flat roof of a three-story apartment building in the lower Haight, and when he looked out the window he could see the tar and gravel surface of the roof, stove chimneys, the foot-high ridge that ran along the roof’s perimeter. Farther, he looked over and through other rooftops, and had a broken view of the upper treetops of Golden Gate Park.
A few feet from the room was a trapdoor in the roof, and a wooden stairway that ended just outside the top apartment’s kitchen door. Rheinhardt was allowed access to the kitchen and bathroom, but the rest of the split-level unit was off limits.
The room itself was set up much like his old studio in the Warehouse—cot and bookcases on one wall, worktable and supplies and tools filling the rest of the room.
