Sweet Tooth - Depois Do Apocalipse, Vol. 3: Exército Animal (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

Again, shocked by how amazing this series is. I had low expectations going in based on the subject matter, but trusted Jeff Lemire to pull through for me, and he has in a big way so far. Volume 3 is quite a bit more action-packed than previous volumes. You also get a better feel for the grandeur of the plot and just how evil some of these villains are. By the end of this book, I didn't see Abbott as just a bad guy made worse by circumstance. He is truly a villain and an evil man. Stylistically, there are some great things happening as well. There's one book told almost entirely as prophecy. But it's not just about what's coming. It's done in such a way that transforms an existing character and creates a plot point to switch focus and direction for what's to come. There's another couple of pages where Jeppard's face is blocked by two panels on one page, and on the next the panels are in the same place showing his facial reaction to the current scene. The whole thing just works perfectly and shows how deliberate Lemire is with his layouts and pages. The story is really picking up as well. This was so action-focused that I actually was speeding my page flips at a few points because I do desperately wanted to see what came next. The art continues to improve. As he becomes more comfortable an familiar with the characters, they continue to look better and feel less nebulous in design. Really great things in this book, some excellent reveals, and just great things are sure to be on the way. Best volume so far. The previous two volumes seemed to primarily focus on world and character establishment. They did this well, but besides the original addition of animal children to the familiar end of the world scenario. There seemed little to latch onto in terms of plot, and more specifically, how it was going to paced. For me, this volume got the ball rolling. It hints at a more expansive narrative than I originally thought would feature. It also shows the types of relationships that are being forged and how deep these bonds may eventually dig. Most importantly, I'm starting to become invested in these characters and their relationships, and this is usually a good sign for the future. The art is also slowely winning me over. It's still inconsistent, in that sometimes an expressive close up or detailed landscape fits perfectly. Other times, in static panels for dialogue, it seems rushed and overly chaotic. But overall, I'm liking it more than I originally thought I would from looking at the covers.
