The 2nd Life Of Abigail Walker (2000) - Plot & Excerpts
I thought this was a good book for children. It did have some fantasy elements, with a surrealistic fox character, which may be hard for some children to grasp. It dealt with some good issues for children; Abigail is overweight and has to cope with some bullying by some girls at school. It also deals with a veteran of the Iraq war who has PTSD, so this theme may be too difficult for some children. I enjoyed the book very much. I quite enjoyed it while I read it, but on reflection, I do think there was a awful lot going on, which made it difficult to resolve. I think the parents are so awful that if not a resolution, there has to be a confrontation. What little there was was told after the fact in an off-hand way that was a big let-down. Also, there was a great set-up for a confrontation with her dad that went nowhere and was never mentioned again.I see some people weren't too fond of the fox's story element. I actually liked it. I thought it was interesting, but I'm not sure it was necessary. Still, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to certain friends who like this type of story. Also, unrelated to the story, I thought the cover was awful because I couldn't read the title. The spine, the front, the title page, I had no idea what the book was called because the font was so wacky. I seriously thought at first, it was Frances O The Second Life and that Abigail Walker was the author. That's not the author's fault, of course. It was pretty, which is what caught my eye, but I do like to know the title.
