The 33. Jonathan Franklin (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

I listened to the audiobook version, and it's fun with the accents. This starts out promising, as a tale of survival. But since it's a foregone conclusion, and the reader is told what will happen and how it will end, a lot of suspense was sapped out of it. It's a true story, but the author assumes that every reader will know that, or picked it up for that reason. If it was told with more suspense, it might be more likely to stand the test of time. After the rescue, there was too much wrap-up, much of it falling on the mundane side of things, at least for me. I stopped reading at about 96% of the way through. Here is part of a blog post I wrote reviewing this book. It was difficult to read at times but I couldn't help but admire the heroism of these men. They never gave up hope. A lesson for all of us when things get tough. As I read Jonathan Franklin’s “33 Men” I feel honored to have witnessed their heroic ascent out of a dangerous, alive mine that almost look 33 lives. What impressed me the most was their determination, faith and respect for each other to survive while the odds were against them. I’m still amazed after reading this beautifully written book that anything is possible once you set your mind to it. Moreover, it brings to mind the minor, inconsequential things we take for granted: water and fresh air that were just a memory for these 33 Men. Lastly, the heroic rescue workers who worked hour after hour with little breaks to unleash the “33 Men” from their tomb. Many rescue workers, therefore, wanted to help by using their talent to save lives. This story is about 33 hard working men who went to work one day that suddenly became heroes. I tip my hat off to these 33 men who gave me a new perspective on what I take for granted. Thank You.

Quite compelling, particularly the attempts by the psychologists to keep the men calm and happy.
