The 57 Lives Of Alex Wayfare (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
First off, the fact that this is labeled as Alex Wayfare, #1 is of some comfort. The biggest complaint I had about this novel was how quickly it came to an end, with some rather big questions still unanswered and no sense of resolution. I shouldn't be surprised that there will be a sequel or sequels.Quite a bit of this novel is dedicated to filling in the history or mechanics of Alex's time traveling and how her abilities are tied to her major relationships without placing them into a larger context. We see her come and go in some histories, stumbling her way through them rather clueless, and we see her sent back to others better prepared but still not fully knowledgeable about how everything works. Just like Alex, the reader is often left out of the information loop, experiencing things as they come along and without enough background knowledge to know how to interpret anything. And this is okay for me, though I can see how it won't be for everyone. The novel also has a very leisurely pace for at least three fourths of the story but picks up speed, and how, as it nears the end. However, leisurely by no means equals boring. It is in turns charming and frustrating but that somehow works to its advantage.Probably best suited to older teens who will have the patience to read through to the end. Wonderful story! Excellent writing and character development. Enough plot twists to be exciting and keep you on your toes, but not over the top. Sad it's over but so happy to have read it.Merged review:Wonderful story! Excellent writing and character development.
