The Adventures Of A South Pole Pig: A Novel Of Snow And Courage (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
This was a rough read for me, but my niece loved it. So, because of that this story is truly for the animal lover. Also, it is very much a children's book. My niece loves the action and the adventures the pig went on. She loved the idea that a pig could be a sled puller. She loved the idea that a pug could even want to have that many adventures. She is glad that we read that book and she loved the mix of humor, adventure, and fun. This is a wonderful book in the tradition of Charlotte's Web. The relationships between the protagonist Flora (the pig) and Sophia (the cat), Oscar (the lead dog and "puller"), Aleric (the human cabin boy), and the ship's Captain reveal new emotional insights about what it is to be more than what is expected. Flora's desire to push physical and emotional boundaries to create a new identity is both brave and poignant. Kurtz allows us to feel her fear, her wonder and its combination. This is a coming-of-age novel that allows young readers to experience the Antarctic landscape in its fullness: the light, the cold, the silence and the loneliness. The illustrations by Jennifer Black Reinhardt are sweet, smart and exactly rendered to reveal the spirit of this narrative and its characters.
