The American Heiress (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

Unfortunately, I had to lead a discussion of this book.Because Downton Abbey was extremely popular on television at the same time, I had to convince my book group that the novel was poorly written and reminded me of a soap opera (like Downton Abbey). I succeeded! Similar setting, same time frame, substitute American debutante whose mother is going to marry her to a European title, whatever it takes. I thought the book was an interesting read. I have a really bad habit of starting books and never finishing, either because I get bored half way through and decide to pick something else up or its because I get busy and forget about it. With this book, I didn't do either. It got my attention and kept my attention from beginning to end. I gave it a lower score of 2 instead of 4 because I didn't really care for how the author ended the book. I understand why she gave the Duchess and Duke the ending that she did, however, I would've liked a different ending for Bertha and Jim and Teddy. I feel like they got the short end of the stick (so to speak). It's still an interesting read, it is definitely Downton Abbey fan-fiction.

What do You think about The American Heiress (2010)?

After reading this, I'm actually pretty surprised at the low ratings... That being said, this isn't your usual plot driven novel - it's more a story.Well written this isn't a romance novel or a traditional historical fiction. It's not based on real life, yet the story could have easily been true and seems to be a well researched piece into the time. There was one scene at the beginning of the book that was weird, slightly distasteful, and really didn't mesh with the book. Make it past that and this is a good, albeit long novel to curl up with this winter.

Utterly ridiculous but occasionally drew me in anyway.
