The Art Of Non-Conformity: Set Your Own Rules, Live The Life You Want, And Change The World (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
Well, I really liked this book but I do think you should approach it with caution. There are many interesting ideas in it, I found it profoundly inspiring and I really liked the idea of living your life in freedom, living it the way you wanna live it, even If it doesn't go with the conventions that are written in our society. The only idea presented in the book that bugged me is the one about universities and the whole college experience. I'm a college student in this moment, and I enjoy it so much, the point of getting an education is not finding a job, is growing as a person and becoming more aware of the world that we live in, that's what I pay the money for, not because some institution is going to assure me that I'll find some job because of it. Learning is a delightful experience, It shouldn't be considered just as the means to find a job. But like I said, the key with this book is just to take the ideas that you find valid and valuable and let them inspire you. The only way to know is to read it yourself. While I found Guillebeau's tone arrogant at times (he would be proud I deemed it so), I did like many of his messages, such as radical exclusion (eliminating that which is unnecessary in your life) and distinguishing between legacy work vs busy work. As a 9 to 5'er myself, it provided some serious food for thought and a healthy dose of inspiration in evaluating my life path. I also appreciated his priority on charitable giving (or "investing in people", as he put it).
