The Best Advice I Ever Got: Lessons From Extraordinary Lives (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

I realized fairly quickly in that I am not necessarily the target audience -- it is mostly a collection of "graduation speeches." Most of them were your typical fare: follow your passion, fear not, embrace your uniqness... Ultimately what I found most interesting is what each indivual's choice of topic said about them as a person and their core values. I did read about ten of them to my kids and had some nice discussions. If you can slog through the almost unbelievably idyllic upbringing of Couric described in the opening chapter, you'll find a nice compilation of sage, commencement-like advice from former US presidents, business people, actors, chefs, comedians and the like. What struck me from the outset was something noted explicitly in Fareed Zakaria's contribution: the often overstated, but truly empowering follow-your-dreams, success-is-a-nonlinear-path, never-give-up, you-can-do-whatever-you-put-your-mind-to optimism that threads through each contribution is uniquely American. And I loved it.
