I pull my phone out of my purse and call a cab. “He’ll be here in a few minutes,” I mutter to Stephen. “So this is it, huh? We’re over, just like that?” I drop my head and sigh. “What do you want me to say? That everything is okay and we’ll be perfectly happy together forever and ever?” “Yes, because it’s true. We can have that.” He looks at me with pain-filled eyes. “No, we can’t. If I told you that I would be a fucking liar and you know it, Stephen.” I wrap my arms around him and he buries his head in my neck. “If you truly knew for sure you wanted to be with me, you wouldn’t have had to take me to the church to make sure you were making the right decision. You wouldn’t have felt confused. You would have been positive. You would have been sure I was the one you wanted to be with for the rest of your life. And you didn’t know.”
