The Boy On The Porch (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

I don't know guys...I give it four stars because I really really liked it but I am old and I really think this one was written for a much younger age group...at first I thought I was going to hate it...it reminded me to much of that 'The Odd Life of Timothy Green' movie - which I truly did not care for...I mean there are even ivy leaves all over the cover on the copy I read...but it is a very sweet read and you do really care for the boy and the couple who take care of him...so I don't know what to do...it's a tough one...I just do not think a juvenile would appreciate the story and I do not think a young adult would sit through it but somewhere there must be a group for whom this should be a summer reading list addition...perhaps a family read for the second or third grader. Another beautiful story by Sharon Creech. This is the third book by SC that I've read with my 9 year old daughter and we plan to read more together. A boy shows up on the porch of John and Marta. He is about 6 years old and all John and Marta know about the little boy is that his name is Jacob and his mother left him on their porch because she could not take care of him. Jacob doesn't talk. But he is a delightfully happy and loving child. John and Marta learn to communicate with Jacob and love him him immediately. They are torn about reporting his sudden appearance on their porch. Finally it becomes increasingly difficult. The boy's father shows up one day and takes Jacob. To console each other john and Martha start fostering other children. They find great joy in doing so. They always honor the memory of that first boy - Jacob.
