What do You think about The Candy Corn Contest (1987)?
This was an easy read. Richard's teacher tells their class about her candy corn contest. Whoever guesses the correct number of pieces in the jar gets the jar. The rules are, "Every time you read a page from your library book, you can take a guess." I found this to be very clever. Richard is also concerned about the sleep-over that he is going to have after Thanksgiving, as one of his friends has a bed-wetting problem. Richard puts himself in a bad situation as he is tempted by the candy corn jar. Richard discovers that his bed-wetting friend turns out to be a great friend and that when you make a mistake you can make it right. I would classify subjects in this book as:1. contests2. estimating3. reading4. Thanksgiving5. bed-wetting6. honesty7. caring8. friendship Pg. 8 has a simile, "She was wearing red sneakers. Her legs looked like Slim Jim pretzels"
