Ruby asked the next Saturday when she found me on her front steps. “That second step was a little iffy. It should be fine now though,” I said, scraping my thumb across the top of the new wood. “I guess why would be a better question,” she said. I grabbed the toolbox and put it back in my car, and then bounded up the steps and into the house. Then I walked through the living room and into the kitchen to retrieve a bottle of water, which I drank in three swallows. “That’s dangerous, Ruby,” I said, staring at her. She jumped as though startled and her gaze flew to mine. “What?” she finally asked. I stalked toward her, keeping my gaze glued to hers. “You look at a man like that and he’ll get ideas.” “Like what?” she asked, her voice shy but deep with desire. “Like this,” I responded, letting my gaze trace over her body with the same hunger that had been in hers. “I didn’t look…” she said, trailing off when I lifted a brow. She blanched, and blushed so sweetly I couldn’t resist kissing her.
