The Cow Loves Cookies (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

Read this cute book to my daycare kids this morning and thought I would write a review about it!This was a fun read for my 4 kiddos, aged 18 months - almost 5. The rhyming was great, the illustrations are nicely done and most importantly... the entire book kept their attention! This would be a great book that you could use in all sorts of themes. Animals, farms, food groups... just to name a few.One thing I love about rhyming books and books that have a repeating phrase, is that most of the time by the second or third time the kids start participating in the 'reading' and say the phrase with you. In this book, it's the phrase THE COW LOVES COOKIES! Audience: PrimaryGenre: Picture/Animals/ComedyPre-Reading Strategy: Shared ReadingScript:This would be a excellent book to use for students who are having a more difficult time reading.First, we would start off with going over the book. We would discuss the title, the cover of the book, and the author. Based on what we know so far, we would make predictions of what we think might happen in this book.I would read aloud the story to the students, taking time to pause and asking students about what is going on in this story, making sure they are following along. I would ask such questions like "What did the farmer feed the horse? And what do the geese love?" After we have finished, I would ask the students to retell the story in their own words. After we have finished discussion, I would have them take their turn in reading out loud the book. This could be done individually or as group, each sharing a page or a sentence, depending on how they feel. Afterwards, we would finish up with a craft relating to the story. For example, Making a paper cow and cookies for her, or another animal of their choosing and what the farmer feeds them in the book.
