The Curl Up And Dye (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

The Curl Up and Dye by Sharon Sala was a great read for me. It’s one of those books that let you escape your own world for a while and I really needed that. It’s engaging, heartwarming, funny, sassy, and just plain good – it is Southern fiction at its best! I like nothing better than when I open a book and I find myself drawn in from the beginning pages and that is exactly what I got with The Curl Up and Dye. I loved the town of Blessings and I adored the characters who jump off the pages right into your heart – all except for the ones you’d rather give a good solid thumping!LilyAnn had it all in high school being the pretty and popular girl who was crowned the Peachy-Keen Queen. She even had the perfect boyfriend in Randy Joe. It seemed everything was headed in the right direction for LilyAnn until Randy Joe goes to Iraq and ends up killed. LilyAnn falls apart and never does manage to make her way back to the confident girl she used to be. Now more than ten years later LilyAnn finds herself overweight, out of shape, and still in the same rut she always was. It isn’t until a good looking guy with a souped up truck blows into town that LilyAnn finds herself wanting to make changes to try to get back to that girl she used to be.LilyAnn has woken up and is determined to get her life back on track and hopefully even start dating again. It’s too bad she can’t see how her neighbour and long time best friend Mike looks at her. The poor guy has been in love with her pretty much his whole life and he is still holding onto the hope that she will one day love him back. So while he’s happy she’s making all these changes to get healthy he’s not too happy about the fact that she is looking to date again. Then we’ve got the ladies, especially Sister, at The Curl Up and Dye hair salon who think that LilyAnn and Mike make the perfect couple. While doing LilyAnn’s and Mike’s hair she decides a little meddling certainly can’t hurt and just maybe it’ll wake the two of them up enough that they both realize they can’t live without each other.I really enjoyed my visit to Blessings, Georgia. It would be so awesome to live in a town like Blessings where people know you and are always willing to lend a helping hand. I fell in love in with LilyAnn, Mike, and all the other quirky characters and I really hope there are going to more books to follow with these characters because I’d love another chance to spend some time with them. I especially like the spunky LilyAnn who isn’t afraid to kick some butt if she needs too. She had me laughing out loud more than a few times. On another note there is sexual content in this book. I’m not bothered by it but I know some of my readers may be.The Curl Up and Dye is for those readers who enjoy women’s fiction and Southern fiction and definitely one I’d recommend! I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I didn't really expect to like it, buy Mrs. Sala came through as always. The Curl up and dye is the beauty salon at the center of a small southern town. There are lots of characters in this book and the POV changes frequently, but it's not distracting, it actually helps to capture the feel of a small town, where everybody knows everybody. It's a fun, easy read, with a few serious moments thrown in for good drama. Looking forward to the next in the series.
