The Dangerous Animals Club (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
I won this in a Goodreads Giveaway, and am glad I did. This is the exact type of book I'd never know how much I'd enjoy and would probably never stumble upon on my own sifting through genres of books I expect to like. The first story, which the book is named after, really grabbed me from the first couple pages and was simultaneously and subtly a nostalgic, hilarious, and touching portrayal of what it is to be a young boy, a father, a human. The stories are written with such a sense of ease and groundedness so as to be very relatable even in instances of being completely foreign experiences to the reader. The author to me, has the feel of a person you just can't help but like and one that captivates you while feeling so ordinary at the same time.Great collection of stories and ruminations on life. This recorded book was a delight to hear in the author's voice. The humor in it was mainly subtle, yet it amused me nonetheless. There are a good number of memoir vignettes, not necessarily in chronological order including the author's boyhood and his middle years. The title story would make a great read for middle school age boys. As a non-aspiring actor, I found that his comments about acting school, auditions and other aspects of acting were quite revealing. As the book progressed I found myself getting more involved in the author's persona and life. I haven't checked, but it would be nice if he has written a second volume.
