I thoroughly enjoyed reading this installment of the Shannara story. The links to characters from the original series makes some of the adventurers seem like meeting up with old friends. The plot is fairly transparent following a few different sets of familiar adventurers all connected originally to one task, save the Four Lands from the Forbidding. The Straken Lord is the leader of hordes of demons escaping into the Lands because the wall separating the two worlds is failing. Each of the groups have rushed to save or accomplish their piece of what will be needed. From there. the ride is raucous and dangerous. And great fun! I feel like Terry Brooks has no end in sight for this series! He keeps writing little tidbits of information to give him a reason to write another book in the Shannara world -which is great as this is obviously what he loves doing; but does it have to be so plain? I remember the first book in the epic series, it made me fall in love with fantasy. Now I feel like he writes to fulfill his contracts. There is no substance to the characters anymore. There are no crazy plots twists and turns, there are no OMG moments that make me want to yell and scream. There are the only the same old plots adapted book after book after book. The only subtle difference - NEW NAMES for the same TYPE of character. I will keep buying and reading his books though, because I can not leave a series unfinished!!
I like Terry Brooks' style of writing. The book is entertaining, but somewhat predictable at times.
