As worker bees piled into the elevator, I ended up standing next to Derek, who stared at me but didn’t say much. And things got uncomfortably tight, triggering some hyperventilation. At one time, Derek Moubin in such close proximity would have had a stimulating effect on me. It was as if my body and brain had switched off Derek, and turned on Bradley. I wondered if that made me fickle. To avoid eye contact, I checked the definition on my dictionary app: fickle | adjective | changing frequently, esp. as regards one’s loyalties, interests, or affection. Shit. Crap. But then, how could I be fickle? Derek and I never had anything steady going on. By reputation, he was a notorious womanizer and I had never allowed myself to get serious about him. And yes, there had been an occasional hot night with the handsome art director. I just made sure I had plenty of condoms on hand. He looked particularly fine this morning, dressed in a vintage WW II Army Air Core field jacket. He wore the military coat with its collar up, over black wash jeans and grungy motorcycle boots.
