The Dreams You Made In The Dirt (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
i didn't like it, all the time i felt like Cole was taking advantage on Aiden. and HE WAS, for the God's sake. 18yo boy thrown out and beaten up almost to death by his own father falling for a guy who rescued him. older guy. and that would be still fine, i guess, but i couldn't help that it looked like Aiden wasn't afraid for the first time, he wanted "everything" with Cole because he was bigger and stronger than he was but he felt safe. how fucked up it is? and i am sorry, but most of the time i thought that Aiden had more problems than "broken fingers, ribs and fuckload of bruises", he was acting like a little, scared KID and it is another proof Cole should not get involved in anything with him. The fact that Aiden wanted to go first to home to his father who was supposed to want him dead, and then to the city with Cole to find his mother who left years ago screams KID. that's a story about two guys, or rather a man and a teenage boy, who tries to be less miserable together. I like Lisa Henry's writing style and how she portrays the hurt in her characters. This short story tells the story of Cole, an ex-military haunted by the death and tragedy of his life in war. And also of Aiden, a boy suffering from dyslexia and abuse from his father. What awkward meeting turned to an unexpected turn of events in their lives as well as remembering long forgotten memories. Together they shared pain, fear and love. One of Lisa Henry's talent is how she writes raw emotions in her words and makes it through the readers heart. This book shows the ache within both characters however, this time, Lisa Henry's gift of words didn't hit me thoroughly like I've expected it to be. Yes, the book's words were laced with pain but I felt that there was something lacking, that there could have been more. I really like Aiden and him being an innocent and helpless child. I like the idea of him needing to be taken care of and for him to learn and grow as a person. I think the relationship of Aiden and Cole turning sexual progressed rather quickly. I am not really that disappointed, I like this piece and I would love to read more of Aiden and Cole.
