The Duty Of A Beta (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

Kim Dare is a great erotic romance author, especially if you like male on male, and even more so if you like a bit of BDSM thrown in to the mix. What is special about Dare’s work is that she’s very flexible in her writing, some of her stories involve leather clubs and full on whipping, while other stories are just about dominance in the bedroom. It’s quite nice and it allows the readers to choose what level they are comfortable reading. The first installment in the series Mark of an Alpha had me hooked, I was so excited when the second one Strength of a Gamma came out. And finally I just got to read Duty of a Beta. In the second book we meet Gunnar, and frankly I didn’t like him. Even at the beginning of this book the way he treats Steffan makes me angry. He’s constantly growling and snapping at anyone who meets his eyes. It’s through Talbot’s eyes that I start liking Gunnar and seeing his true personality. Talbot is the pack’s Omega, and what that means to the pack is a little blurry. Some packs abuse their Omega, while others over coddle them. Gunnar isn’t suppose to be attracted to the Omega. He was brought into the pack for the trouble maker Alfred, but when Talbot meets Gunnar’s eyes he sees him looking at him like he wants to hold the Omega, not snap at him for challenging him. This is a great series, and this story is a pretty nice length. It’s about 100 pages (36,500 words). I’m really interested in Caden and Alfred… I did not see that coming. This one has less bondage than the previous two, but there’s still a nice little “tie up” scene. Enjoy!~ Bitten by Books for ARe Cafe This book had very light BDSM in that the couple had a clear dominant and submissive. I didn't like Gunnar in the last book, but I liked him much more in this book. He's still a tool, but I guess that's part of being the Beta and taskmaster of the pack. While the Alphas don't need to pound their chests to demonstrate their leadership of the pack, the Beta seems much more threatened by everyone below them and therefore prone to more machismo. In this book, Talbot, the Omega, seems to be able to tone Gunnar down a little which is exactly what he needs. I definitely felt the connection of this couple much more than Steffan and Francis in the last book. Talbot is a perfect mate for the high-strung Beta.
