The Girl Most Likely To... (2008) - Plot & Excerpts

I would like to rate this book one star but my conscience prevents me from doing so since the book was not a mass of grammatical errors and the story had a beginning and end, with a middle thrown in the mix. However I did not like it. The book attempted to tackle some serious issues that women face. However, it did not focus on how to remove yourself from those situations or even how to avoid them. Instead it showed how the women were to blame for all that happened to them and only after they accepted they are to blame for what has occurred are they able to move forward with their life. Now, I know that people need to own up to their actions, however I have a problem with one person being blamed for everything by everyone without others seeing and accepting the fault they have in creating the situation. The main woman character in this book faced this type adversity. Everything they did was wrong and and the fault of everyone else's life sucking. The only person this is actually true for was her son, but even then the son (a grown man) could not or would not see the circumstances that led his mother to make the choices she did, thus he villified her and accepted others, while ignoring the fact their actions led to her being in the situation that led to those choices. That really ticked me off.The other women in this story were not portrayed much better. There was the psycho ex, low self esteem divorce, the "whorish" friend, the bitter aunt, the beaten wife, and the timid girlfriend, to name a few. All these women had problems that only men could fix, even though most of the women's problem was caused by a man. What really ticked me off was that while the women were having revelations and claiming their problems, the men's growth came from pointing out the problems the women had and bypassing there own shortcomings. Not a story I would recommend. 20 years. 20 long years. Think you have what it takes to confront the small town you left 20 years ago. See the face of the 17 year old boy that you once loved turned into a man? Kat strolled into town and did just that... but she had more baggage than her "ha look at me now attitude". She was going to tell her once upon a time lover that he in fact had a son. A boy who is now a man at 20 years old. I know right?? That's jacked up and plain dirty! To not tell the man he had a son allllllll of those years! But I digress...I really liked Riley. He is the reason that I continued the book, and I'm glad I did. Hidden within the dysfunction is a cute little story about the cancer that lies can create. How it can infiltrate and consume our lives. That once everything is out in the open as it should be, we can be free.Personal favorites from the book: the flashbacks. Period. (literally, haha) I found the flashbacks to be sweet and it showed how Riley has been a real man since his boyhood, always caring and protecting Kat.Now the ex, Carrie. What was her deal? I thought maybe there was going to be a murder plot there or something sinfully juicy, but no.... She just gave up... The whole back and forth between her and Madeline was pretty lame and equally petty, especially when they both put up their truces.I had a change of heart with this book. At first I thought that Kat was a selfish, pretentious, you-know-what. But then once you got into it, it was a dysfunctional work of art! However, because I deal greatly with graphic design in my line of work I have to comment on the cover... I mean come on! What grown woman wants to read a book with a cartoon cover?? That was my first beef. And then it looks like a mall changing room. Kat was not described as a pretentious diva. She was only dressed to the nines to impress her old town. I only read this book because I scanned the barcode and saw good reviews, however without that technology I would have to rely on the cover to capture my attention. Newsflash: I would have put it back.... NO MORE CARTOON COVERS!
